The Top 5 Worst Places to Level in Azeroth

This level makes me cry!

This level makes me cry!

Since Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King we’ve recieved some pretty awesome areas that crank out the gold and make our leveling grinds mostly painless.  Unfortunately, you’re stuck in Azeroth from 1-58 and there’s a reason these are probably the hardest levels to get through.

Quite frankly, some of the area designs of old WoW are just awful.  Here’s a list of the ones to be avoided:

#5  Silithus.  You might want to turn off your sounds and music to get through this place.  There’s a constant buzzing going on in the background that can really grate on your nerves after awhile.  The scenery isn’t much better than the ambiance- its mostly a flat wasteland with lots rocks.  Oh, did we mention the bugs?  If you’re at all squeamish about multi-legged critters, Silithus is especially horrible.  The random world pvp gimmick is also more of a nuisance than it is fun- weird powder that slows you down so you’re easy to gank?  Uh huh…  Thankfully, since the release of Burning Crusade you don’t even have to bother with this bug nest.

#4 Thousand Needles.  This one is more dull than irritating- but its not without its annoyances.  After slogging through the entirety of the ginormous barrens, it isn’t exactly fun to come to a place with pretty much the same color scheme.  The endless number of high cliffs here make mining annoying and getting to towns and quest givers extra work.  The quests are as boring as the schenery- and they only get more so when you reach the shimmering flats.  ‘Kill a certain number of every single mob type’ gets old after a while.

#3 Felwood.  The area itself doesn’t look bad- the forest actually provides an interesting background and you have all these neat plague infested animals to play with.  Plus, what could be bad about a level that’s basically just a line?  It’s all in the way the quests are set up.  You’ll get a quest that will send you all the way to the top half of the level- making for a long trip up there and back.  Upon turning it in the NPC will have the nerve to give you another quest to go back. You couldn’t have given me both so I could get them done while I was already up there? Of course not… Time to trudge all the way up and back again.  If that weren’t bad enough- whoever heard of a REP GRIND just to get to the next area?!  Just let me through you darn fuzzballs!

#2 Desolace.  You won’t find any colorful scenery here- the entire level is a giant grey desert.  You’d hope such an ugly area would be short, but the place is HUGE.  Locating a town when you first get there is a major pain in itself but it gets worse.  The first town you come upon doesn’t have a flight path. Nope.  You’re in for ALOT more trekking through ugly town until you finally make it to a town with a flight path at the bottom of the level. Ugh.  Gee, and they’ve just given you a quest to go to the middle of the zone? HAVE FUN WALKING.  There’s no other flight path to be had!

#1 Azshara.  This one wins my undying hatred for being the worst designed level ever.  The sheer cliffs lined with naga at the bottoms make getting around as annoying as possible.  Just finding your quest givers and towns is a HUGE pain.   Not even hunter tracking can help you- it won’t be clear how high or low your mob/quest-giver is and there’s sure to be tons of cliffs and trenches in your way to avoid if you don’t want to have to make the long trek back up the stupid beach!

But cheer up folks- hopefully when Cataclysm is released and Azeroth undergoes its big change these levels will get the redesigns they desperatly need!
